What Does Dryer Duct Cleaning Involve?

Clean dryer ducts safeguard houses and other residential buildings from dangerous clothes dryer fires. While lint filters help to keep material from becoming trapped and creating a fire hazard, periodic cleaning is necessary to prevent buildup over time.

Even with a well-functioning lint trap, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends clearing lint from your dryer vent at least once a year. You should clean it more often if you notice poor dryer performance or you have a particularly long vent pipe.

Cleaning your dryer duct involves:

1. Inspecting the dryer venting system for damage, blockages, and other issues.
2. Disconnecting the dryer from its power source and turning off any attached gas lines.
3. Pulling your dryer away from the wall and detaching it from the exhaust duct.
4. Vacuuming loose lint and dust out of the dryer vent opening and duct hole.
5. Scrubbing away the remaining buildup and blowing or vacuuming any residue produced by the scrubbing.
6. Removing any blockages and cleaning the duct’s exterior air vent.
7. Reassembling the dryer duct elements and pushing the dryer back into position.
8. Testing with a short cycle to ensure appropriate airflow.

How Much Does Dryer Duct Cleaning Cost on Average?

According to HomeAdvisor, professional dryer vent cleaning typically costs between $103 and $185, with an average of around $144. Longer vent runs, roof or upstairs vents, pest intrusion, and heavier lint buildup can push a job towards $300 or more. In Austin, where the cost of living is slightly above the national average, prices tend to fall on the higher end of that range.

At WOW Total Cleaning, our standard dryer duct cleaning is $189, which includes a full inspection of your dryer venting system and a video inspection of the duct so you can see exactly what we find. For longer runs, roof or upstairs vents, or heavier blockages, we will confirm any price difference with you before we begin. Contact us to schedule your dryer duct cleaning.

Factors Affecting the Price of Dryer Duct Cleaning

Dryer duct cleaning prices differ depending on several factors, including:

• Vent location: Expect the price to clean a dryer vent system that goes through your building’s upper levels or the roof to be higher than for a first-floor or basement vent. Thorough dryer vent cleaning on an upper level can require specialized equipment.
• Duct length: The longer your dryer duct, the higher the average cost for dryer vent cleaning. Prices often increase by the linear foot, roughly $6 to $11 per foot, so a long 30-foot run costs noticeably more to clean than a short 5-foot one.
• Pest intrusion: If your vent cover is open or damaged, pests may have taken up residence. Clearing the nest and debris left by unwanted animals will increase your dryer vent cleaning price. You may also need to pay for separate pest removal and mitigation services from a pest control company.
• Previous cleaning: For vents that have not been cleaned recently or regularly, the cost is usually higher because there is more lint buildup. You can prevent this by scheduling regular cleanings, annually or more frequently, depending on your dryer’s performance.
